The Pauls Valley Hospital Authority voted unanimously to close Pauls Valley General Hospital in a special called meeting on Friday, October 12.
Mayor Gary Alfred said the decision to close the hospital was one he dreaded.
“We basically have no options,” he said prior to the vote. “This is truly a sad day for all of us.”
Alfred said part of the hospital’s problem is the former management group had put a lien on the hospital’s accounts receivables, leaving the hospital with no funds to operate on.
“That made it a struggle not to just keep the hospital open but to provide quality patient care.”
Due to a lack of staffing and funding, the hospital has not been able to admit patients over the past few weeks.
After a long silence Councilwoman Shiril Montgomery tearfully made the motion to cease operations at the hospital and take the required steps to proceed to close the hospital.
Councilman Patrick Grimmett seconded the motion.
Each councilperson then reluctantly gave their “yes” vote to closing the hospital.
The News Star will have an in depth story on the hospital closing in next week’s issue.
